Question:
  • Austin Maestro TD - Smoke?

    Dear Bill,

I have just brought a Austin Maestro diesel turbo 2.0 the problem is that it smokes every so often mainly after its warmed up when pulling away it can leave behind dark clouds of smoke yet I can go a few more miles it appears to clear a few miles later smoke again can you give me any ideas please.

Answer:

  • Dear Maxine,

It sounds (from your discription) as if the valve stem seals have dried out this causes just this problem, really they should be changed, but you can use a chemical additive called "Stop Smoke" or "Lucas" or "Low Smoke" all of which are available from your nearest A1 Motor Store or accessory shop, simply add it to your oil it can make quite a difference, but will take a couple of days to take effect.

If of course the seals have gone to far then it's hand in pocket or purse and a fairly expensive job, but give the additive a try it's a much cheaper solution.

I don't want to depress you too much so I haven't mentioned the possibility of a faulty Turbo, try my suggestion first and I hope we don't have to mention "Turbo's" again

    Regards   Bill.
