Question:

    Peugeot 405 1.9 Diesel stalling

    Dear Sirs

My query relates to a Peugeot 405 GRD 1.9 non turbo. It is a G plate with @88000 miles on the clock.

It is suffering from a very rough idle and stalls almost every time you lift off the accelerator until the engine is thouroughly warmed up.

The air and fuel filters, exhaust and the cold start advance mechanism have all been replaced to little effect. The engine has also been given a thorough dose of engine flush and all the external breather hoses have been removed and appear to be clear.

Any further advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Tom Lauder

Answer:

    Dear Tom & Lynne,

Normally 88,000 miles would not be considered a lot on a Diesel particularly a Peugeot/Citroen diesel, they're one of the best, with normal service at 6000 miles intervals it should give close on a 250,000.

Your problem is almost certainly fuel related, hopefully not the pump, cus they're very expensive, I would think it's the Fuel Injectors, they can and do get really fouled up and the fuel that's "sprayed" by each injector is uneven causing just the symptoms you describe.

They will probably need removing and cleaning, though there are some additives you can put in the fuel tank that can work, from your description though I think an additive would struggle, and there are companies who can clean the injectors with a special machine without removing them.

You should check also to make sure there are no air leaks or leaking fuel hoses, but I am sure you would have noticed an oil/fuel leak.

I feel fairly confident that cleaning the injectors will cure most of your problems, There's one thing for sure, it will not do any wrong and can only do good.

I hope this helps you, let me know how you get on, so that I can pass on your problems and hopefully the cure to others on our Free Help Site.

    Good Luck.
