Question:

    1986 Nissan Bluebird -Power Steering

It is now getting very noisy and clonky - what's the best way of dealing with this please?

    Tricia

Answer:

    Dear Tricia,

Normally, noisy power steering is a sign of fluid loss, or a loose drive belt, first check the fluid reservoir and top up with the correct fluid, your fluid supplier will be able to tell which fluid to use, either Dextron or AQF, and it's important to get the correct one, next get the Belt checked and if necessary adjusted.

If these don't cure it, I'm afraid it will probably mean a new pump, but get it checked, it's unlikely but it could be the Power Steering Rack that's at fault, it is more likely to be the pump and fluid though, I certainly hope it is for you, as racks and pumps are very expensive, any good garage will be only to pleased to check your fluid level, and will almost certainly give you an opinion on the noise, and probably with only the charge for the fluid.

I hope this has been of some help, for the benefit of our other site users, please let me know how you get on, we can pass on your experiences to others.

    Good Luck

    Regards
