Question:

Having recently aquired my first diesel car (a Ford Mondeo), I am interested in finding out the potential life expectancy of (a) the engine, (b) the glow plugs and (c) the fuel pump. Could you please advise.

    Many thanks,

    Colin

Answer:

    Dear Colin,

Thanks for your questions, the life expectancy of most "Small" Diesel Engines is as you would expect, dependent on the way in which they're driven and serviced.

With normal driving, and with regular service and by that I mean a service every 6000 miles or Six Months which ever comes first, irrespective of what the makers say, by service I mean:- the Oil - Oil Filter and Fuel Filter at the very least should be changed at those intervals, you should get in the region of 200000 miles out of most Diesel engines.

The Glo Plugs usually need changing at around 50000 miles intervals, the fuel pump at around 100000 miles, (if you change the Fuel Filter as recommended).

Obviously many other things need checking at normal recommended service intervals, but for those specified I don't think you'll go far wrong if you follow my advice, and by the way always use a good quality Oil, Comma make one called:- EuroDiesel, we use on all Diesel Services, It's great quality and excellent value.

I hope this helps, enjoy your Mondeo.

    Regards Bill
