Question:
Subject: Ford Cortina
Dear Bill,
Thanks for your last E-Mail regarding the problems with my Cortina. Sorry that I dont have a copy of our last E-Mail, so the story so far is:
I have a Ford Cortina 1.6GL. 1982, fitted with a automatic choke and VV carburettor. When the engine is cold it starts first time and runs great until it reaches operating temperature, then it will not idle and stops if the engine revs are not kept up. If the engine is turned off for a short period of time (a couple of minutes usually does it), it will start and run OK.
In your reply you suggested changing the carburettor Diaphram and having the Carburettor set up. This I have done, but the problem still remains. The garage that set the carburettor up, said that the carb was well worn and that I need a new one.
So I would be grateful if you have any more suggestions or will I need a new carb, also is it possible to buy a reconditioned carb to save some money. If so do you have a contact number.
Thanks - Tom
Answer:
Dear Tom,
I don't think you have been advised wrongly, the Carbs on this model were susceptible to wear, and you probably could do with a replacement carb.
I am sure that some early Sierra Carbs are the same as yours, so try the better breakers yards for a second hand one, other than that , there is a firm in Luton called.. Auto Techniques, their address is Kingsway, Luton, they may be able to help you obtain an exchange one.
I hope this is of help
Regards Bill
