Hello Bill, I have a question about brakes.
1994 Vauxhall Senator
I currently have large solid discs on the front with (I think) Girling
calipers. The discs are starting to ridge and I was wondering if I would
benefit from a non-GM disc/caliper combination, e.g. AP Lockheed ?
The rear discs appear to be standard spec. Would it be possible to
upgrade the rear braking system to the same spec as the front discs with the same
brake infrastructure (master cylinder etc) ?
I notice that some after-market brake firms sell braided hoses and claim
that these improve braking response and reduce "sponginess".
I would value your opinion on the above.
Martin
Hi Martin,
Your Brakes should be ATE Lockheed, and there isn't a conversion available
as far as I know, the wear ridge is caused purely and simply by normal wear &tear.
When you eventually replace your Discs and Pads, you will need to "Bed"
them in very carefully as both the Senator and Carlton are renowned for brake
judder, this is almost always caused by excessive heat generated when the pads and
discs are first fitted, sometimes to the extent of almost not being able to hold the
wheel.
So soft braking and early braking for the first 3.or 4 days at least to allow easy bedding in.
Regarding the rears, because they are used so much less of the time than
the front, there would be little benefit to uprate them even if it were
possible... which I am sure it's not.
When you do eventually change the Discs and Pads, we always use AP
Lockheed Pads and Discs, they are the ones we have had least trouble with.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
