Is it True That Diesels Need Less Attention and Service
Definitely not... Diesel engines need at least as much attention as petrol engines, and when they've done very high mileages they require more... it's very important to change the Oil and Filter and the Fuel filter at fairly regular intervals... approximately 6000 miles and definitely once a year.
The Cam Belt should also be changed at around 50,000 miles.(check your handbook to be sure - or phone your favourite garage or Email me for the correct time on your vehicle).
Diesel engined vehicles have to be tested at special M.O.T. centres... (they have Smoke Meter machines which are designed to measure the pollution\soot coming from the exhaust)... part of this test involves holding the "revs" fairly high for quite a long time... old and weak Cam Belts have been known to break during the test, so change it before the MOT is done... specially if it's done a very high mileage and your not sure if it's been changed or not.
If in any doubt, consult a garage or a specialist centre
